Cahokia, a massive ancient city of six square miles risen from the floodplanes of the Mississippi River. The proportions and sophistication of this city of earthen mounds rivaled the largest European cities at the time. Named for a lost tribe known to inhabit the area, archaeological research depicts the timespan of this civilization to be from A.D. 700 to 1400. At it’s peak, there was an estimated 20,000 inhabitants. It is not yet determined exactly why Cahokia was abandoned, but by 1400 the site had been vacated. Unfortunately, many of the mounds were leveled in the 1800’s and used as filler soil in agriculture. The main structures remain intact and are now recognized as a World Heritage Site. These mounds are monumental in size, and comparable to the pyramids of the ancient cultures of Mexico and Egypt. 

The discoveries made through research of Cahokia have greatly changed the way archaeologists think about Native American social structure. The excavation of mound 72 revealed the decapitated bodies of 53 males and females, indicating likely ritual human sacrifice. Cahokia seems to have served as a cultural mecca for the thriving Mississippian settlements that dotted the banks of the great river. Evidence also has been presented that the layout of Cahokia’s structures is cosmically aligned, as with the monuments left behind by other lost civilizations. Sally A. Cosmology is simply and vastly the discipline of studying the function of the universe as a whole. This seems to be a one concept that unites every culture ever known to inhabit the earth. In fact, you can view an extensive but limited list of historical cosmologies on the Wikipedia page devoted to it. It seems that the more we delve into ancient golden age culture, the deeper we find our relationship with the cosmos. We have been clearly shown with global archaeological evidence that we have been living in a dark age compared to the understanding of our ancestors. Why do we choose to call ourselves their technological superiors? Why do we pursue an ignorant way of life? What information are we missing that might lead us back to an era of conscious living and cosmic balance? Are we to ever relearn our place within the universe? We find patterns around every corner of creation, yet have regarded ourselves outside of the governance of these guides for centuries. 

I am certain that there will be a culmination of archaeological and cultural discovery within the next crucial 10 years of human existence. This culmination of thought will present scientific and spiritual advancement in indisputable harmony. It will prove the true potential of human function and the true precious nature of earth as a symbiotic being. The farther we look back into our vivid past as a species, the more we find the answers to peace lie in understanding of the order of oneness that we are all held by.
